antique-gilt-carved-wood-cresting-fragment-rosette
Antique French Gilt Carved Wood Cresting Fragment, Rosette and Volute

A carved and gilded wood cresting fragment from a French interior or furniture surround, circa 1800. The design is symmetrical: two scrolling acanthus volutes flank a pair of rosette medallions set on a flat rail base, a composition that reflects the classicizing ornament of the Louis XVI and Directoire periods. Pieces like this came from boiserie panels, bed crowns, mirror surrounds, or cabinet cornices, and entered the collector market when the interiors they adorned were broken up. The gilding retains its warm, aged surface with honest oxidation in the recesses and rubbing at the high points that only comes with two centuries of handling.

[d]Type | Cresting fragment, architectural salvage

[d]Material | Carved wood, gesso ground, gold leaf gilding

[d]Origin | France

[d]Age | Circa 1800, Louis XVI to Directoire period

[d]Style | French neoclassical, Louis XVI to Directoire

[d]Motif | Paired rosette medallions, scrolling acanthus volutes

[d]Size | 8.5 in H x 15 in W x 3.25 in D

[d]Display | Presented on a wood plinth via metal rod attachment

[condition]

The fragment is in good antique condition consistent with its age and salvage history. The front face retains the majority of its gilt surface, with warm oxidation throughout the recesses and natural rubbing at the high points of the volutes and rosette centers. There is one concentrated loss to the gesso and gilding at the center of the base rail, roughly thumbnail-sized, where the red bole ground is fully exposed; the surrounding rail shows general surface wear, fine craquelure, and accumulated dirt consistent with age. The back is unfinished raw wood, as original, and shows the hand-tool marks of period construction, with more significant gesso loss at the back face and base consistent with long attachment to a ground surface. The structural integrity of the carved wood is sound throughout. The fragment is presented on a wood plinth via a metal rod through the base; the rod is inserted at a slight angle so the fragment leans modestly to one side rather than sitting perfectly vertical. No repairs or regilding are evident.
