The scrolling acanthus foliage is deeply undercut and vigorously modeled, with a confidence and physicality that sits closer to the Baroque and Louis XV traditions than to the flattened neoclassical ornament of the same period. That combination, classical subject handled with pre-classical energy, is characteristic of the best French workshop carving of the late 18th and very early 19th centuries. The fragment almost certainly flanked something originally, a doorway, chimney breast, mirror surround, or bed crown, and was saved when that setting was broken up.

[d]Type | Acanthus fragment, architectural salvage

[d]Material | Carved wood, gesso ground, gold leaf gilding

[d]Origin | France

[d]Age | Circa 1800, late Louis XV to Louis XVI period

[d]Style | French Baroque-inflected acanthus, late 18th century

[d]Motif | Scrolling acanthus foliage, deeply undercut

[d]Size | 6 in H x 11 in W x 3.25 in D

[d]Display | Presented on a wood plinth via metal rod attachment

[condition]

The fragment is in good antique condition with honest wear and age-appropriate losses. The front face retains the majority of its gilt surface, with warm oxidation in the deep recesses of the acanthus carving and natural rubbing at the high points of the scrolls and leaf tips. There are scattered losses to the gesso and gilding across the front face, concentrated at the edges and at several points within the foliate carving. The back shows more significant losses to the gesso and gilding, with some structural roughness at the edges consistent with removal from an original ground. Several nail or screw holes are visible on the back, as expected for a piece once fixed to an architectural surface. The carved wood structure is sound. The fragment is presented on a wood plinth via a metal rod through the base; the fit allows some movement and is not a fixed mount. No repairs or regilding are evident.

https://austynmariedesign.com/products/antique-french-gilt-carved-wood-cresting-fragment-rosette-volute-circa-1800
