The ebonized surface is well worn, more so than you might expect, with broad rubbing across the top panel where the black has thinned and warmer brown and gray tones show through. Along the raised molded edge there is finish loss and fine age cracking in the old surface. To my eye this all reads as genuine age and honest use rather than damage, and it gives the piece real character, but I want you to see it clearly in the photos and know it is a worn surface, not a crisp one. The underside is dry and shows its plain panel construction, some old edge nicks, and an old cursive pencil inscription I cannot fully read. It looks like an old ownership or inventory notation rather than a maker, so I am not attributing it to anyone. The piece sits flat and stable on its four original bun feet with no rock, and the feet are solid. No sign of active woodworm.
