A fine craquelure network runs throughout and is most legible across the sky, where the pale ground reads through the cracks. It is even, tight, and consistent across the whole surface, and it is one of the reasons the panel dates as early as it does.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe varnish is warm and has yellowed with age, which pushes the entire picture toward gold and softens the blues in the sky and the distant hills. A buyer should understand that the cooler tonality underneath is recoverable by a conservator if they want it, and that some of the golden cast currently in the picture belongs to the varnish rather than to the paint. In the upper right of the sky there is a cloudy area in the varnish layer. Scattered small pale flecks sit in the sky and the upper middle distance, and a few dark specks and a small red-brown mark sit in the lower left quadrant. There is light rubbing along the extreme edges of the painted surface where the panel meets the frame rebate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe panel itself is flat, with no split, warp, or crack. The reverse is plain and carries no maker's stamp, colourman mark, or inscription of any kind, which is why the dating here rests on construction and handling rather than on documentation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe frame is where the losses are, and there are real ones. The upper left cartouche has a chip with a separation at the join. The right rail has a loss to the composition ornament. The lower right corner has a loss and an open crack running back from the mitre. Gesso cracking shows at several corner joins, and the high points of the ornament are rubbed through to the gesso and bole in the way a gilt composition frame of this age normally is. Several small areas have been touched in with gold paint, and those touch-ins read slightly flatter than the surrounding gilding. None of this affects stability.
