The dominant approach to landscape painting in Britain and France from roughly 1800 to 1860, in which the weather, the light and the mood of a place matter more than a literal record of it. Painters working this way built pictures around effects like sunrise, sunset, storm and mist, and kept the figures small so the setting reads as vast. The varnish has discoloured and warmed with age, which is pulling the sky slightly further toward amber than it would have read originally, and there is light surface grime over the whole.
